Iranian Civilian Deaths in the Iran War

Reported. Based on reported deaths. A running total, published by HRANA through July 17, 2026, and by Airwars since. Methodology last updated .

Iranian civilians killed in the U.S. war with Iran since February 28, 2026, from running totals published by HRANA and Airwars.

This represents Iranian civilian deaths due to the War in Iran.

This is an experimental counter.

Background

The United States and Israel launched a massive attack on Iran on February 28, 2026. A ceasefire was announced on April 8, 2026; a new wave of U.S. attacks began on July 8, 2026 and has continued since. This counter tracks deaths of Iranian civilians attributable to that war, whichever belligerent caused them.

Methodology

This counter combines two sources, joined at a fixed date.

Through July 17, 2026: HRANA. The baseline is the cumulative civilian count published by the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), an arm of Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA), a non-profit founded in 2010 by Iranian exiles in the United States. HRANA has a reputation for careful data gathering, and since its members have been critical of the Iranian government for over 20 years, they seem unlikely to intentionally produce biased numbers. HRANA published cumulative totals through April 7, 2026 (1,701 civilians) and one report on the new wave covering July 8–17 (20 civilians), then stopped aggregate reporting. HRANA's 714 deaths it could not classify as civilian or military are not counted here.

From July 18, 2026: Airwars. Airwars is a UK-based monitoring organization that documents civilian harm from military action incident by incident. For each incident inside Iran it publishes the minimum and maximum civilians reported killed, graded and geolocated. This counter adds the minimum reported killed for every Airwars incident dated July 18, 2026 or later, matching HRANA's "at least" framing. Airwars publishes incidents days to weeks after they occur and revises them as research continues, so recent weeks are always incomplete and this counter is a floor, not an estimate.

The two methodologies differ: HRANA verified individual deaths through its own network; Airwars grades open-source reports. If any organization later publishes a verified cumulative total covering the whole war, this counter will adopt it and the incident rows will be absorbed into it.

HRANA's figures do not distinguish deaths caused by Israel from deaths caused by the United States, so they are combined totals. Airwars names the attacking force for each incident (shown in the counter's data table), and from July 18 this counter includes only incidents in which Airwars names U.S. forces, alone or jointly with Israel. Strikes attributed to Israel alone are not counted.
